Fashion Drawing skills you will learn

Graphic communication is the language of the designer and drawing is a skill which will convey to all in the production team the accuracy of the design.

Drawing is a learnable skill and you do not need to be artistic to complete this program as you learn a step- by- step system to draw figures and garments which represent your creative designs.

When you receive your SITAM AB drawing tool and Fashion Design manual you begin practising the figure construction using an 8 head height grid for drawing figures for women, men and children in the basic front position. You then begin to draw figure poses in motion to ensure your garment drawings have a dynamic appearance. You then proceed with greatly increased confidence to drawing heads, hands and feet

Once you have mastered the 24 cm figure on the grid you are able to begin drawing garment parts and you do a number of exercises in drawing all the folds and shades of different garment types. Then you begin dressing the figure to identify pattern construction points and various silhouettes and their relation to the body with practice examples

Below you see one example of a student drawing using the 24cm figure which shows the hanging point and design lines which can then be referenced into a pattern and final garment to realise the full potential of the design. You can see this coat made up on the student design page of this website.

You also learn to apply the design principles and elements and use different methods of designing so you will never run out of ideas as you learn to combine interesting units into an original design. When you are able to competently design and draw your own four garments and have selected fabric samples and colours you present your range with costings of final garments.

In the Diploma year you learn different methods of Fashion Illustration techniques based on designing a collection with freehand drawing perspective and light. You will also apply in your illustrations the colour theory with illustrated examples of colour combinations.

You also learn technical drawing with a methodology to demonstrate the correlation between a flat fashion drawing and basic points of the body to calculate measurable specifications for patternmaking to produce a flat garment with the third dimension. One example of a technical drawing is shown below.

In the Advanced Diploma when you have mastered the manual skills of drawing you learn to use a CAD program which has been created by TELESTIA AB for small business production . You can draw on screen your designs or/and use the library of pattern blocks to email to local or overseas manufacturers. This means that you can ensure that your range is accurately reproduced regardless of the language barriers around the world used by machinists. This CAD program enables a single designer to use the same production chain as the large scale manufacturers.

As you can see this is a most comprehensive program and you will be able to confidently express your designs in graphic form and then illustrate them so that when the final garment is completed they will be an exact replica of your original drawing- that is the hallmark of a professional designer !

Design is visual and the expression of those ideas in graphic form is the key to successful communication. You can start now !!
