Fashion Design by Distance Learning

Diane Langton has successfully completed her Certificate IV in Fashion Design and Technology by Distance Learning. This is a nationally accredited course and yet she was able to gain hands-on skills and set up her own business all from her own home in rural Victoria.

Diane says:

"I have always had a love of fashion but had assumed that the opportunity for me to study Fashion Design was not be possible, as I live within rural Victoria. I saw an advertisement for the College of Fashion Design. I immediately knew that it was a great opportunity for me to begin following my passion. I was very interested in the concept of distance learning because that would mean that I could continue to work while I studied. I rang the college that day and received all the information I required to make a decision to enrol. The learning material and the CD ROM supplied, was easy to follow and great for self paced learning. I have found learning by distance has fitted into my lifestyle as I have been able to adjust my progress according to work and family commitments. If I ever needed clarification or guidance during my progress, it was always just an email or a phone call away. The ongoing support I have received has been invaluable. I have learnt all the practical aspects of fashion design, using the TELESTIA CD ROM, including how to design, illustrate and draft patterns that allow construction of a garment that actually fits. I have learnt the principles of fashion design and the development of a wardrobe to suit body types and lifestyles. This knowledge is something I will be able to use to enable me to establish a home based business aimed at women who want individual garments, designed to flatter their body type and shape. The inspiration for my final four garments was born during a recent trip to India. I fell in love with the elegance, colours, textures and traditional design lines of the Indian garments. I decided to use Sari fabric as a basis for garments that replicated the practicality of the Salwar Kameez , combined with western style silhouette design lines. This course has not only allowed me to develop practical skills, it has also, through encouragement and support, strengthened my confidence and a belief in myself to pursue my goals."

Below you will see a fashion illustration based on her Eastern theme and a photograph of her wearing the final garment. It is the mark of a true professional to be able create a concept, draw it, make the patterns and construct the garment to fit ,exactly like the original design. NO accidents on the way.

Diane now has the skills and qualifications to be able make for clients and to design and draw exactly their requirements so there is no confusion at the first fitting.
