E -learning Now in Fashion September 03, 2009 |
E learning Now In FashionYes! You can keep your day job and still learn the technical skills to build your fashion career thanks to the award winning state of the art TELESTIA AB CD’s which enable you in your own home to view patternmaking and grading processes,”real time” sewing demonstrations as well as figure drawing and technical drawing to assist your learning. You as the learner are able to install these on your computer easily so you have a ‘live in tutor’ as you complete the projects required to achieve units for an Australian qualification in Fashion Design and Technology. You progressively send in your patterns and drawings with photos of you wearing the garment to the College of Fashion to show your skill development. In Certificate IV in Fashion Design and Technology after completing practical assignments you design, illustrate , make the patterns and construct four garments made to YOUR measurements so you show independent skills. At Diploma level you learn to draft Standard sizing patterns and grade so you are able to develop a range . There are huge advantages in e learning over classroom learning in time and money as there is no need to risk everything and relocate to a city college and study full time to achieve a fashion qualification If you are a mature age learner it means you do not have to sit in a large class of school leavers who occupy a large amount of teacher attention. Working at your own pace in your own time means you can accelerate your learning or build it around your young family and/or work commitments over a longer period. Whether you learn on-site in a classroom or by e learning the Certificate IV/Diploma projects are designed to achieve continuous skill development in four distinct stages which you can always ask your self as you progress 1.Do I know how to do it ? 2.Can I do it in a practise situation ? 3.Can I do it independently at appropriate times? 4.Can I do it better than previously ? In achieving an Australian Qualification at Certificate IV the skill development required is to gain both the knowledge and the practice and then show ”independence in self directed learning and apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems “ This is the first time that complex skills for fashion can be delivered and assessed outside of the traditional “same time same place classroom’ thanks to TELESTIA AB e learning training tools and is a wonderful opportunity for those who cannot afford the time or the money to invest in a full time fashion course. There is one thing both on site and elearning have in common however and that is MOTIVATION and ORGANISATION! Many will say it is too hard to work at home, there are too many distractions, I can’t follow the instructions, and no one tells me what to do. Maybe it is easier to go to a class and be organised and hopefully the teacher will do it for me.! On site teachers struggle with this attitude and are constantly urging students to problem solve and take responsibility for their learning . There are many who take advantage of the self paced materials and it is a joy to see them develop independent skills but others block their learning with reactive defences and blame tactics ie “”you told me It’s your fault!” Every classroom teacher has heard that cry ! HANDS-ON SKILLS ARE THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUR SUCCESS IN YOUR FASHION CAREER The next stage of solving problems and conceptualising is the difficult one both with e learning and on site. Sometimes in a class of 17 it is easy to overlook the independent learner who needs as much encouragement as the learners still practising the skills from the book and’or CD’s/ It is a skilful teacher who can guide students into discovering the solution to their own problems and the content of the CD’s whether used in a group class or in an individual assists greatly along with the training manuals and tools to gain the knowledge and practice to master a range of skills. When the learner does discover the joy of using their skills to solve problems it is very exciting, especially for the teacher but even more so for the learner. This success encourages greater problem solving and if the basic skills have been sufficiently mastered there is a great satisfaction in applying them . The College of Fashion Design can provide you with the educational excellence and SITAM AB can provide you with world best training tools for your skill development but YOU provide the motivation and perseverance. What a winning combination !! There is one thing the Distance Learners do miss –that is the social aspects of learning ! SO here is an idea for You. What do you think about a get together for all SITAM AB enthusiasts both classroom and elearners - maybe next year? Let us know if you are interested !
